Recent updates for the Puget Island Diking District:
September:
The District has scheduled a contractor to spray for invasive aquatic weeds and blackberries. The project is scheduled for the week of September 14th. In-water spraying will be done with an airboat and/or an UTV with a spray boom.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has added emphasis on controlling blackberry growth along dike slopes. The District is asking landowners to remove blackberries from dike slopes adjacent to their property. If a landowner chooses to spray herbicides on the blackberries, the District asks to use only a herbicide that targets brush. The District encourages the growth of native grasses along dike slopes to prevent erosion issues. Starting September 14th any remaining blackberries along the District’s dike right-of-way will be sprayed. “No Spray” signs are invalid without a signed vegetation management agreement with the Diking District.
The public should not water gardens or livestock out of the sloughs for ten days after the in-water application.
August:
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and Port of Portland dredge are currently replenishing the District’s sandpit. The sandpit is closed to the public until completion of the project. The project is scheduled through at least September 7th.
